AHI Physicians Awarded Aetna Aexcel-Designation
PHOENIX (Sept. 27, 2011) – Arizona Heart Institute physicians have been named by Aetna as top performers for specialties in general surgery, cardiology and vascular surgery. Aexcel® is a designation within Aetna’s Performance Network which identifies physicians in 12 specialties who have met certain clinical performance and efficiency standards.
In order to receive Aexcel designation, physicians must meet a certain minimum patient volume and pass clinical performance criteria to be considered. All physicians are evaluated using five categories of measure. Additionally, specialists are identified as a participant in Aetna’s network who managed at least 20 episodes of care for Aetna members over the past three years.
“We are extremely proud to be recognized as top performers in these clinical specialty areas at Arizona Heart Institute,” said Dr. Mark Kestner, chief medical officer, Abrazo Health Care. “These particular categories speak volumes to our patients who seek high-level medical care for general surgery, cardiology and vascular surgery needs.”
Aetna determines Aexcel-designated physicians by closely reviewing hospital readmission and health complications rates, outcomes, cost for service, and number and types of services performed, in addition to age, gender, chronic disease risk, insurance type and year service was paid. The evaluation standards are measurable and trustworthy and are recognized by leading medical associations.
