Wednesday, August 10, 2011 - Arizona Heart Institute pioneers new device to treat abdominal aortic aneurysms
PHOENIX (Aug. 10, 2011) – Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) affects an estimated 1.2 million people in the United States. For many, AAA – or ballooning in the body’s main artery – typically causes no symptoms until it ruptures, which can be deadly. But for those with a known AAA of a certain size, patients may benefit from a minimally invasive treatment alternative to open surgery, including a new medical device recently approved by the FDA. Dr. Venkatesh Ramaiah, a vascular surgeon at Arizona Heart Institute and Arizona Heart Hospital, is among the first physicians in the nation to utilize the innovative Endologix AFX™ Endovascular AAA System.

A stent graft creates a new path for blood flow, reducing pressure on the aneurysm and the risk of rupture. The Endologix AFX Endovascular AAA System expands the number of AAA patients who can receive minimally invasive treatment because of its enhanced lower profile delivery system and new graft material with improved sealing properties.

“In addition to being easy to navigate through even tight and tortuous arteries, this unique device is designed to conform to a broader range of aortic anatomies, enabling us to offer less invasive options to more complex AAA patients than ever before,” said Dr. Ramaiah.

Minimally invasive stent grafts offer a lower-risk alternative to open surgical repair and are associated with minimal blood loss, faster recovery, and shorter hospital stays.

“The AFX device performed exactly as intended during our first case yesterday,” continued Dr. Ramaiah. ”Whereas the patient’s anatomy was rather complex, this low profile device was rather easy to implant. Additionally, the device is more user-friendly and more accurate in its deployment compared to older generation technology, offering the patient a much shorter operative time and speedier recovery. The patient did really well, the aneurysm sealed, and she is ready to go home today.” To learn more about Endologix AFX Endovascular AAA System, visit
