David J.  Caparrelli, M.D.

Cardiovascular Surgeon

Dr. David J. Caparrelli joined the Arizona Heart Institute (AHI) as a Cardiovascular Surgeon in July 2008. A former fellow of endovascular surgery at the Arizona Heart Institute, Dr. Caparrelli has returned to AHI after completing his cardiothoracic surgery training at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland.

Dr. Caparrelli received his Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry from Princeton University and his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine where he spent an additional year as a post-doctoral research fellow in thoracic oncology. Dr. Caparrelli then completed his general, vascular and cardiothoracic surgical residencies at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. While at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Caparrelli published numerous articles in peerreviewed journals and authored several chapters related to cardiovascular medicine. For his work he was awarded the George D. Zuidema Resident Research Award and the Baltimore Academy of Surgery Resident Research Award in 2002 as well as the Gershon Efron Award for Clinical Research in 2004. In 2008, Dr. Caparrelli was honored with the C. Walton Lillehei-Earl Bakken Cardiac Surgery Resident Award presented at the Society of Thoracic Surgeons Annual Meeting.

Deeply committed to education and the evolution of the cardiovascular specialist, Dr. Caparrelli has served on a number of committees including the STS Workforce on Internet Applications, the Cardiothoracic Surgery Network (CTSNet.org) Resident Editorial Board and the Edward B. Diethrich Vascular Surgical Society Fellowship Committee. He is also affiliated with a number of other medical societies including the Peripheral Vascular Surgery Society (PVSS), the International Society of Endovascular Specialists (ISES), and the American College of Cardiology (ACC).

Dr. Caparrelli has a special interest in the treatment of aortic and branch vessel pathologies employing both conventional and endovascular techniques such as carotid endarterectomy and stenting, aortic valve replacement, thoracic endografting and aortic root surgery including valve-sparing root replacement.

Dr. Caparrelli provides services at the Arizona Heart Institute main office located in central Phoenix.
